California has a very high amount of German Americans living in the state, as well as a storied history of prominent Germans. Levi Strauss, the inventor of blue jeans, moved to the state from Germany in 1853. Thomas Mann, the Nobel prize winning German author, fled to California in 1939 to avoid persecution by the Nazis. He lived in Los Angeles for many years and helped to form multiple German societies in the state that still exist today.
