May Punch (Maibowle)

May Punch (Maibowle)

If you’ve ever wanted to bottle the feeling of spring in Germany, Maibowle (May Punch) is about as close as it gets. This traditional German spring wine punch is lightly sweet, aromatic, and festive—made by briefly infusing wine with sweet woodruff (Waldmeister), then “stretching” it with more crisp white wine and sparkling water or sparkling wine. It’s the signature sip for Maifest / Springfest gatherings, backyard parties, and any warm-weather table that needs something bright and celebratory.

On your Maifest traditions page, Maibowle is highlighted as a classic seasonal drink and woodruff is called out as the key flavor that creates that distinctive “May wine” taste.

May Punch (Maibowle)

A refreshing blend of white wine, sparkling wine (or mineral water) and wild woodruff, festively garnished with colorful fruit and sprigs of woodruff herb.

  • 12 sprigs young sweet woodruff use 3 vanilla beans as substitute
  • 1-1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 bottle Mosel wine or Saar-Ruwer wine or other similar German dry white wine
  • 1 cup brandy
  • 3 bottles Mosel or Saar-Ruwer wine or other similar German dry white wines
  • 1 quart carbonated water or German sparkling wine

Notes

Tips for the best Maibowle

  • Respect the 30-minute rule. Your recipe is very clear: infuse for 30 minutes and no longer. That’s a key success detail for flavor balance.
  • Choose a crisp white wine. The recipe recommends Mosel or Saar-Ruwer style dry whites; those keep the punch light and springy.
  • Make it party-proof. Add the sparkling water/sparkling wine right before serving so the bubbles stay lively. (Still follows your method—just sequencing advice.)
  • Garnish like a German host. Citrus, pineapple sticks, and herb sprigs make it feel instantly festive without extra work.

When to serve it

  • Maifest / Springfest celebrations (this is the classic pairing).
  • Outdoor gatherings: picnics, brunch tables, backyard BBQs
  • Any spring menu where you’re serving lighter foods, salads, or snack boards
