Kartoffelsuppe a la Angela Merkel
A favorite meal of the former chancellor, made with firm potatoes, onions, leeks, and cream seasoned with marjoram and mustard

Ingredients
- 2 onions, small
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 pinch salt
- 28 oz firm potatoes (800g)
- 1 leek
- 5 cups vegetable or meat broth (1.25 liter)
- 4 fl.oz whipping cream (110g)
- 1 tsp extra hot mustard (Düsseldorf style)
- 2 tsp marjoram, dry
Instructions
- Peel and dice onions
- Peel potatoes, cut into cubes
- Clean leek, cut into rings and wash carefully
- Saute' onions in large pot for about 3 minutes
- Add potatoes and leeks. Saute' for another 2 minutes. Add broth and stir.
- Cover pot with klid and simmer broth for 25 minutes, until potatoes and leeks are soft
- Puree soup in blender, with blender stick, or by hand with masher
- If desired, add bockwurst or debreziner sausage and medium hot mustard
Notes
In an interview, German chancellor Angela Merkel once confessed that her most favorite meal is homemade potato soup, using spuds from her own garden. She eventually shared her recipe which had been adapted by Zeit Magazin food editor Elisabeth Raether in her honor .
