Camembert Spread (Obazda)

Obazda (Obatzter, Obazter) is a traditional Bavarian cheese paprika spread made from Camambert and sour cream that's served with traditional pretzels or on crispbread as an appetizer or snack.

  • 8-10 oz. very ripe Camembert
  • ½ small yellow onion peeled and very finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter softened
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 3 tbsp sour cream
  • salt
  • fresh ground black pepper


  • Mash the Camembert with a fork.
  • Mix Camembert with the onion, butter, paprika, and sour cream in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper and refrigerate.
  • Take the spread out of the refrigerator 1 hour before serving to bring to room temperature. Enjoy with crispbread on the same day it is made for the freshest taste.
